The Inaugural Staff Recognition Awards Presentation Dinner held at McCracken’s Country Club on Thursday 30th October proved to be an outstanding success. The attendance at the dinner was fantastic, with colleagues, family and friends alike supporting the finalists for the Awards. In all more than 140 people attended the Presentation including, the Minister for Health Ms Lea Stevens, The Opposition Minister, Mr Dean Brown, The Chief Executive of the Department of Human Services Mr Jim Birch, Ms Lyn Poole and Ms Raelene Burke from Country & Disability Services of DHS and Ms Meredith Hodgeson, RGM from the Mid North Region. In attendance were also members of the Regional Board of Directors and the Regional General Manager, Mr Kevin Eglinton. The MC for the evening was the Chairman of the Regional Board Mr Michael Pengilly.

Mr John Schuman was the Guest Speaker who’s very amusing address kept everyone entertained during dinner.

Following Mr Schumans address the Awards Ceremony began with the naming of the finalists who were all presented with a Certificate by the Minister for Health, Ms Lea Stevens. The Award recipients for each Category represented was announced by the Minister and presented with a Trophy and Prize Certificate.

The Finalists for the Awards were:

Best Quality Activity/Contribution - Individual

Wendy Clark, Southern Fleurieu HS

Trish Mc Reynolds, Strathalbyn District Health Service

The Award went to Trish Mc Reynolds for her ‘distinctive approach in facilitating Quality Management Systems in Aged Care’.



Best Quality Activity/Contribution - Departmental

There were no finalists in this category



Outstanding Achievement – Individual

Christine Banks, Adelaide Hills CHS

Judy Hicks, Mt Barker SM Hospital

Tim Hobbs, Murray Mallee CHS

The Award went to Judy Hicks for her ‘effervescent approach to the difficult task of Infection Control’

Outstanding Achievement – Departmental

Administration Team, Southern Fleurieu HS

Diabetes Team, Adelaide Hills CHS

YACRAP, Adelaide Hills CHS

The Award went to the YACRAP Team for the exceptional services provided to youth of the Adelaide Hills.

Outstanding Achievement – Organisational

There were no finalists in this category

Innovation in Practice – Non-Clinical

Bryan Blundell, Northern Adelaide Hills Health Service

Raelene Schutz, Pinnaroo SM Hospital

Vicki Spratt, Lameroo District Health Services

The Award went to Bryan Blundell, for his ‘ideas, leadership and commitment to Redevelopment at the Health Service’.



Ms Raelene Schutz and Ms Vicki Spratt received High Commendation Certificates for ‘their committed approach to achieving best practice through innovation and leadership to the Hotel Services Department of their organisations’.

Innovation in Practice – Clinical

Regional Fast Stream Rehabilitation Service, Strathalbyn District health Service

Georgia Gillespie, Kangaroo Island Health Service

Melanie Hawk, Southern Fleurieu HS

The Award went to The Regional Fast Stream Rehabilitation Service for ‘the quality and uniqueness of the service’.

Best Team Member

Steven Bailey, Mt Barker SM Hospital

Aylene Mueller, Northern Adelaide Hills Health Service, Mt Pleasant Campus

Jolie Thomas, Adelaide Hills CHS

The Award went to Jolie Thomas for ‘her committed approach to team development and best practice’.



Aylene Mueller received a High Commendation Certificate for ‘her commitment to her team and the community.

The fact that the evening was a success was evidenced by the number of people who stayed to celebrate long after the ceremonies had finished.

Our Congratulations go out to the finalists and the Award Recipients, the recognition they all received is well deserved. The Regional Board would also like to thank and commend the 64 Groups and Individuals who submitted applications for the Awards Program in its inaugural year.

Following the success of the 2003 Staff Recognition Awards initiative we would also like to offer everyone the opportunity to comment on the Awards process or any other aspect of the Awards where it is felt improvements can be made. The 2003 Awards was the Regions first attempt to recognise the outstanding contribution that staff make to the services the Region and individual Health Units provide to our communities and we realise that there may be areas that we can refine or improve upon and we would welcome your input. The Region is firmly committed to an ongoing program that recognises the extraordinary performance of staff in this region and will continue to support such activities as the Awards Program. Planning for the 2004 Staff Recognition Awards is underway so watch out for announcements in the coming months calling for nominations.
