SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESSES

Top level Regional Initiatives Recruitment & Retention

The Hills Mallee Southern Region has been participating in the SA Rural Education Scholarship Initiative, which is auspiced through the Department Human Services, Social Justice and Country Divisions, since 2002. During that period the Region has sponsored four undergraduates all of whom have or will return to the Region to work for a period commensurate with the length of the scholarship given. The Region has a strong commitment to ensuring that we maintain a skilled workforce in the Region and the Scholarship program is contributing in a meaningful way to our recruitment and retention objectives.

In 2004 we will again be sponsoring a scholarship for an undergraduate student residing within this Region. This year the recipient is Tanya Gardner who resides in Murray Bridge and is studying for her Bachelor of Nursing at the University of South Australia. Tanya completes her course at the end of 2004 and will be spending her graduate year in 2005 working in a Health Service in the Region. We congratulate Tanya and look forward to her joining our workforce next year.

Tanya was presented with the Scholarship by the Minister for Health, the honorable Ms Lea Stevens at a ceremony held at the Old Adelaide Inn on Friday 26th February 2004.

At the ceremony Minister Stevens also awarded a number of Post Graduate Scholarships. The Region was well represented with Frances Watkins, Palliative Care Consultant, Adelaide Hills Community Health Service receiving a scholarship to enable her to finish her Masters of Palliative Care, whilst Cathy Walsh from Southern Fleurieu Health Service was awarded a scholarship to undertake her Masters in Health Care. The Region congratulates Frances and Cathy, they can be justly proud of their achievements.
