The Active Communities Field Officer joined with the Rural City of Murray Bridge’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, MurrayBridgeSpecialSchool and Community Lifestyles Inc. in presenting a “Physical Activity Showcase – Celebrating International Day of People with a disAbility”.

This collaborative event was held at beautiful Sturt Reserve, MurrayBridge on Friday 2nd December 2005, from 10am to 2pm. The aim of the day was to expose people with a disability to activities not normally experienced, such as Sailing, Rowing, Boccia, Croquet and Cycling.

A barrier to participation by these individuals is more often than not the organisation’s capacity to modify their activity, not the enthusiasm to participate. The day highlighted the participating sports innovative solutions to overcome these difficulties and therefore motivate other sports and community organisations to take up the challenge of being inclusive!!!!!!

The guest speaker for the day was Tim Maloney OAM.

  • Gold Medal Winning 1996 Paralympian,
  • 10 years Australian National Team Member
  • 12 Australian Titles Wheelchair Basketball
  • 800m Athletics World Record 1985

The day attracted around 100 participants with a variety of disabilities and backgrounds. Many of the participants described the experience as memorable to participate in sports such as sailing and rowing as there had never previously been an opportunity to do so.
