AHAC Community Consultations

An Aboriginal Health Advisory Committee (AHAC) meeting held on the 29th September 2005, a recommendation was put forward to further develop the AHAC through community consultations.

The AHAC consultations were held on the following dates with the following results:

14th November - VictorHarbor

Five community members arrived for the meeting, but suggested another to meeting to gather a wider audience

8th December - VictorHarbor

Another meeting was held with around 20 community members in attendance, and two positions were filled.

15th November - MurrayBridge, Mannum and Tailem Bend
Another great turn out at the MurrayBridge meeting with 20 community members in attendance, which includes the towns of Mannum and Tailem Bend.

All positions were filled with support from service providers, Di Wilson (APHCU), Sharon Perkins (AHT) and Bill Wilson (CYFS)

21st November Raukkan

The meeting didn’t go ahead as planned due to unforeseen circumstances, so another dates was proposed.

29th November Raukkan

This meeting produced great results with about 25 people in attendance, and two members were elected from the community.

22nd - 23rdNovemberKangarooIsland
We made contact with Val Pain, who had arranged for us to meet with a group of locals. She indicated that the people may not be forthcoming, our scheduled meeting didn’t produce the results we were looking for, and so a different approach was required. The position was eventually filled, and we now have a representative from KangarooIsland.

30th November Meningie
The meeting was held in the local RSL hall with only a few community people in attendance, this however did not deter us and two members were elected.

There is still the need for further meetings with the Elders Group in MurrayBridge, Kalparrin Community, Adelaide Hills and the local youth group.

In conclusion there are eleven (11) positions on the Aboriginal Health Advisory Committee, seven (7) have been filled with a further four (4) to be filled.

It is anticipated that meetings will occur in the New Year with all remaining positions filled. Once the new committee is established, it would be timely to have a planning day to brainstorm the future directions of the committee.
