Each of the sub regions employ a youth worker who facilitates the delivery of a range of health promotion projects through the local high schools and other youth networks. The project has adopted a community development model which encourages participation across the spectrum of young people, the identification of young people needs and design of programs by young people to assist in young people having greater awareness of and control over the issues which affect their overall health.
The programs include:
-
peer education and peer support programs run through high schools,
-
sexual health workshops,
-
regular youth forums
-
recreational programs,
-
support to attend conferences where young people need to have a voice
-
and health promotion activities.
The main issues addressed are:
-
youth homelessness,
-
adolescent health issues around identity and self esteem,
-
drug and alcohol issues,
-
access to employment and training
The youth program can be contacted through each of the local community health centres.
